Lightning caused a fire in the Pinenut Mountains east of Carson City.

Photo submitted by David Riske of the fire burning southeast of Carson City on BLM land. The fire is said to have burned about 50 to 70 acres as of around 9 p.m.

Carson City firefighters and crews from the Nevada Division of Forestry and the BLM are on the fire.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike.

UPDATE 4:21PM July 4: The Tarnahan Fire burning southeast of Carson City is 10 percent contained. No structures are threatened at this time. After GPS of the area was made, the fire was downsized at noon to 25 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Sierra Front had reported about 100 acres early this morning but re-adjusted the figure based on an overhead GPS reading.
Wind conditions are light.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified Mark Allen Flora, 59, of Texas as the second victim of a deadly crash June 23 on Highway 50 in Carson City.

Flora was involved in the head-on crash that also killed 26-year-old Sierra Grace Woodward of Carson City.

The driver of the Nissan Altima believed to be responsible for the crash, Jason William Cloutier, 34, of Carson City, remains in serious condition at Renown Regional Medical Center. Flora was driving a Ford Taurus when he was struck by Cloutier's car which caused it to burst into flames.

Carson City will be in the national spotlight as film crews from C-SPAN will begin taping a segment beginning July 8 that will feature local history and authors that will air to a nationwide audience in August.

Mayor Robert Crowell and Charter Communications will welcome the national network on the steps of the Nevada State Capitol as they prepare for a week-long visit to record and feature the city’s history and literary life. On Monday, July 8, C-SPAN representatives will reveal the stories and segments that will be explored.

Several northern Nevada law enforcement agencies will be teaming up and “Joining Forces” this Independence Day as an additional security measure in providing for a safe holiday weekend.

On Thursday afternoon and evening, police officers from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments, deputies from the Washoe and Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices, and troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol will be conducting the administrative road block on US Highway 50 in Douglas County.

Glide through the waters of Lahontan, enjoying the serenity and wildlife of the Carson River. Free public canoe trips in July and August guided by Lahontan State Recreation Area will start just below the Lahontan Dam along the Carson River and go down to the Irrigation Diversion Dam.

The route is relatively flat and is ideal for beginners learning the basics of canoeing. Canoes, paddles and life jackets will be provided, but participants will need to bring sun block and drinking water. Space is limited. Reserve your canoe ride by calling (775) 577-2226.
