With our current long daylight hours, extremely hot weather, fierce afternoon thunder boomers, high winds, low humidity, and bone-dry vegetation, you need to be aware of the ever-increasing fire danger surrounding us.

Our countryside is a disaster waiting to happen, and it would only take a moment of carelessness, sparks from target shooting, illegal fireworks, a hot vehicle muffler on a dirt road, an abandoned campfire or a tossed cigarette to create a roaring inferno.

Douglas County authorities are searching for a man after a shooting Thursday afternoon in the Topaz Ranch Estates area.

Gary Wilson, 44, is wanted after he allegedly shot an unidentified person in the shoulder. The injury to the victim is considered non life-threatening, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Office news release. The shooting happened at around 2:15 p.m.

Wilson is considered armed and dangerous. He is a white male, approximately 5’10” and 180 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and no shirt.

A motorcycle crash on Highway 50 near Mound House late Thursday morning sent a Carson City man to the hospital via Care Flight, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

The crash happened at 11:45 a.m. near Dayton Hill around mile marker 4 east of Carson City, said NHP Trooper Barbara Stapleton. The motorcycle rider, David Reed, 44, of Carson City rear-ended a 1999 Subaru driven by a 59-year-old Dayton woman.

A 1,000 ounce bar of silver mined from 4,000 tons of Nevada ore is a rarity by far, but visitors to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City can catch a glimpse of the spectacular ingot now on display in preparation for the state’s 150th birthday party.

Site of the historic U.S. Mint, the museum still operates the original Coin Press No. 1 on the last Friday of each month. When the bar is melted into 1000 1-ounce round medallions, the celebrated press will stamp commemorative editions, with the “CC” mint mark, honoring the state’s sesquicentennial which is Nevada Day, 2014.

An underground cable failure knocked out power to 121 NV Energy customers in Carson City early Thursday morning.

NV Energy spokesman Carl Walquist said the problem area originated on Goldfield Avenue. Crews had to install a temporary above-ground cable to serve customers while the underground cable was down. The underground cable will be repaired today, he said.

A Carson Now reader reports their power was out on Appaloosa Court just off Saliman from 12:30 a.m. until 4:30 a.m.

Fire officials report progress on the Bison Fire overnight, with plans Thursday to do continued work on hot spots and to begin the rehabbing process.

Voluntary evacuations for 78 homes were lifted Wednesday at around 6:30 p.m. The fire is 65 percent contained as of Thursday morning with the size of it being reduced to 24,136 acres at this time, said Lisa Ross, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Land Management.

A 31-year-old woman was jailed Wednesday after allegedly stealing a 2005 Dodge truck with the keys left inside from the parking lot at Smith's in Carson City.

Kendra Ann Harkey of Reno is being held on $25,000 bail in the Carson City Jail. According to the arrest report, dispatch advised officers at 10:15 a.m. to be on the look out for the silver-colored truck with Nevada plates.

A Carson City sheriff's officer advised they had located the truck that matched the description parked in the lot of 1400 Rand Avenue. The truck was occupied by Harkey, according to the arrest report.

Carson City area casinos saw its gaming profits increase by 7.4 percent in May, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports Thursday. Statewide, casinos saw an overall increase of 1.37 percent for the month.

Casinos in Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and all other areas of Douglas County except Lake Tahoe report a gaming "win" or profit for the month that totals $8,858,762 over May 2012 figures.

Casinos in the south shore Lake Tahoe area of Stateline also did well for the month, posting a gaming profit increase of 9.7 percent or $14,632,643 over 2012 figures for the month.
