Once you start making rings, you just can’t stop! In this introductory class you will practice basic soldering techniques with a torch and learn how to make fitted rings, put texture on your ring bands and set small stones into a pre-made bezel setting on one of your handmade rings. You will make 3 rings / 2 with stones and 1 plain hammered band.

CAAST Sierra Tahoe to celebrate year of dance, growth in Carson City with anniversary party

Near the heart of Carson City, CAAST Sierra Tahoe has been dedicated to the creativity and growth for young performers over the past year. Guided by Director Miss Sydney Rose, the studio has quickly become a cherished community hub for aspiring dancers of all ages.

To mark their one-year anniversary, CAAST Sierra Tahoe is inviting the community to a day-long celebration on Saturday, August 3, 2024 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring free classes across their diverse program. From mommy and me to fairytale ballet, tap to contemporary, acro to jazz and more, participants can sample the studio’s offerings and discover the joy of movement firsthand.

More than just a dance studio, located at 511 Fairview Drive in Carson City, CAAST Sierra Tahoe embodies a holistic approach to arts education. "Regardless of their academic or career choices, we use the performing arts as a medium to educate, mentor, encourage, and grow our students," explains Miss Sydney. "It’s about more than just dancing; we’re nurturing life skills and attitudes that will serve them beyond the stage."

Indeed, at CAAST Sierra Tahoe, the emphasis extends far beyond perfecting steps and routines. "We're building structure, discipline, and work ethic," said said Miss Sydney Rose at NAMI Northern Nevada’s 2024 Annual Charity Gala. "Our program teaches teamwork, communication skills, and self-advocacy. Through music and dance, we foster genuine self-confidence and social awareness."

Looking ahead, CAAST Sierra Tahoe has ambitious plans for the future.

"We're expanding our conservatory program to prepare dancers for industry-level competitiveness," reveals Miss Izzy. "We’re committed to nurturing talent and passion."

Excitement is also building for their upcoming Christmas show, with open auditions scheduled for August. It’s a chance for students to showcase their skills and creativity on stage, marking another milestone in the studio’s journey.

As CAAST Sierra Tahoe looks back on a year of growth and forward to new horizons, the studio remains dedicated to enriching the lives of its students through the transformative power of dance and music. Whether preparing for a career in the arts or simply seeking personal growth, CAAST Sierra Tahoe continues to inspire the next generation of performers to shine both on and off the dance floor.

Carson City Sheriff's 2024 Night Out at Mills Park around the corner

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will host its annual Sheriff’s Night Out at Mills Park from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6. There will be aircrafts, helicopters, law enforcement vehicles, mounted horses, fire engines, giveaways, music, games and more.

The Elks Club will be barbecuing Flocchini hot dogs at a first come first serve basis. CCSO would also like to thank the local Extra Mile convenience stores for donating buns, ice, water and sodas for the event.

The Sheriff’s Night Out initiative aims to raise awareness about crime and substance abuse, garner support for engaging in local anti-crime initiatives, shine a spotlight on community organizations and their services, and enhance neighborhood cohesion and police-community relationships.

Everyone in the community is invited to join us on the first Tuesday of August, to celebrate the positive relationships with all of our public safety entities, military, lateral partners, and other supporting agencies.

The theme for this year's event is centered on “Parks and Recreation.”

According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, “Parks and Recreation play a vital role in the health of a community, as well as impacting potential crime. When families and friends are engaged in positive community drive activities and events, law enforcement challenges are reduced."

The Sheriff's Office "considers the staff and employees of the Parks and Recreation Department to be direct partners and well worth their center placement as this year’s theme," said Sheriff Furlong.

Mills Park will have more than 40 agencies and organizations participating to meet members of the public, answer questions, and take photos.

St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City is honored to display a curated collection of artworks from Larry and Lorna Williamson in our Summer Exhibit. The exhibit also includes the debut of Lorna Williamson’s personal work in a gallery venue. While she is no longer with us, her work is stunning.

A Collection of Love: The Personal Art Collection of Larry and Lorna Williamson” is an eclectic body of work, featuring the carefully curated personal gallery of the Williamsons' favorite artists. Long-time Virginia City residents and artists, they enjoyed many styles, subjects, and friendships.

Join us for our Summer Art Reception on Saturday, August 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. to have the rare opportunity to bid on their curated collection pieces. Bidding is going on now until September 15. We would love to see you there.

The Carson City Democratics has announced open office hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. seven days a week through Nov. 6. The office is located at 502 E. John St. Suite G.

Volunteer staff is available to provide signs, candidate information or voter registration forms. Everyone welcome.

If you want to register to vote or update your registration, visit the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office website at www.registertovotenv.gov. The June Primary Election is June 11, with early voting May 25 through June 7. The General Election is Nov. 5, 2024; early voting is Oct. 19- Nov. 1.

Historic tours of Nevada State Prison in Carson City offered in August, signups underway

Nevada State Prison Preservation Society

August tours at the Nevada State Prison in Carson City are filling up for the summer, and tours are opening soon for the fall.

The Nevada State Prison has an extensive history within Carson City, beginning as the site of the first meetings of the Territorial Legislature, and quickly becoming the Territorial Prison in 1862. With statehood in 1864, it became the Nevada State Prison, and was the only state prison in Nevada until the late 1950s. Until its closing in 2012, Nevada State Prison was one of the oldest prisons still operating in the entire country.

Tours are 90 minutes in duration and include a tour of the death chamber. Tickets are $20 per person. The last tours for 2024 will be in October.
