Obituary: Fredrick "Rick" Cypher

Fredrick "Rick" Cypher was born July 2, 1947 in Paterson, NJ; he passed away October 12, 2023 in Thornton, CO at age 76.

Rick grew up by "The Jersey Shore" in Toms River, NJ. He is survived by his two younger brothers - Cliff (sister-in-law, Barbara) and Brian (sister-in-law, Ellen); his two sons - Jason (daughter-in-law, Monica); Granddaughter, Makena; and Danny (daughter-in-law, Lori).

He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1966 and completed two tours of duty during the Vietnam War.

Rick began his career in law enforcement with the Ontario, CA Police Department. He later moved his family to Lake Tahoe, where he became a Sheriff's Deputy for Placer County, CA. In 1981 he moved to Carson City, NV and worked for Nevada Division of Investigations, retiring as Deputy Chief in 2002. One of several notable accomplishments in his career was graduating from the FBI National Academy (Session 172) in Quantico, Virginia.

There will be a Celebration of Life held on Saturday, June 1, 11:00am - 2:00pm at the home of Jack and Char (Cypher) Foerschler, 5505 Golden Eagle Lane, Carson City.

Fireworks are For Families

Fireworks are for Families. I understand the need to move the Fireworks this year and the need for RSVP to have a fund raiser. However 4th of July is about celebrating Freedom and Equality for all Americans, not just those who can pay for a good view.

I believe our City could find a way to manage traffic in and out of Centennial Park to afford all of Carson residents a premium family friendly viewing area. Why not use this necessary change as an opportunity to improve our community celebration rather than downgrade it? I believe our leaders could do this.

I imagine that RSVP's golf tournament will attract non-family men and women who do not celebrate with their children on the 4th. Perhaps RSVP could attract the Family Crowd and increase their revenues by asking for $5.00 per car for entrance into the park.

Carson City Leisure Hour Club’s 2024-25 officers inducted

Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization, the Leisure Hour Club, recently installed new officers for the 2024-25 year.

Sworn in during the organization’s May meeting by past president Debbie Lane were: 1st Vice President/Tours – Gary Yoakum, 2nd Vice President/Programs – Gene Munnings, Shelly Harmon - Treasurer, Dan Neverett – Secretary, and Barbara Cavanagh as Director-at-large. President Ed Schnabel will be sworn in at the club’s September meeting.

In addition, the following appointments for the group’s various chair positions were announced: Friendship – Carol Pitts, Reservations – Mary Lee, Raffle – Pauline Ebersold, Membership – Paula Billman, and Newsletter – Dan Neverett.

The Leisure Hour Club was established in September of 1896 and will begin to celebrate its 128th year with its first dinner meeting on Thursday, September 19. The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature. Its motto of "Let knowledge grow from more to more" comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.
