Carson City Leisure Hour Club’s 2024-25 officers inducted

Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization, the Leisure Hour Club, recently installed new officers for the 2024-25 year.

Sworn in during the organization’s May meeting by past president Debbie Lane were: 1st Vice President/Tours – Gary Yoakum, 2nd Vice President/Programs – Gene Munnings, Shelly Harmon - Treasurer, Dan Neverett – Secretary, and Barbara Cavanagh as Director-at-large. President Ed Schnabel will be sworn in at the club’s September meeting.

In addition, the following appointments for the group’s various chair positions were announced: Friendship – Carol Pitts, Reservations – Mary Lee, Raffle – Pauline Ebersold, Membership – Paula Billman, and Newsletter – Dan Neverett.

The Leisure Hour Club was established in September of 1896 and will begin to celebrate its 128th year with its first dinner meeting on Thursday, September 19. The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature. Its motto of "Let knowledge grow from more to more" comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.

Capital City Art Initiative’s Nevada Neighbors hosts 'Big Deal' exhibit talk with artists

The Capital City Art Initiative’s Nevada Neighbors series of public talks includes interviews with artists in their studios or in a gallery setting. CCAI presents artists Stephen Reid talking with artist Joan Arrizabalaga about her work in the Bristlecone Gallery exhibition, "Big Deal."

CCAI’s exhibit by Arrizabalaga is in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery, 2201 W College Parkway, Carson City. The show is up through Sept. 12; the gallery is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Arrizabalaga said, “My present work is concerned with games and gambling. I am interested in how people are involved with temptation, risk, and winning. Using certain symbols, talismans, and behaviors to realize our expectations fascinates to me. This activity is present in everyday life and seems to go well beyond the more straightforward casino world. Everything can be a gamble and I see the use of the magical world to gain success, help us win, or keep us safe. I also like all the mechanisms and paraphernalia concerned with gambling.

“ ’The roll of the dice’, ‘easy money’, ‘the luck of the draw’, ‘manna from Heaven’, and ‘dealer’s choice’ are all expressions that I use as metaphors in my art. I like the familiar faces of the playing cards for my characters because they are subconsciously recognizable even out of context. The Joker is very important. He has many parallels, like the trickster in Native American lore.

“I work with all kinds of materials depending on where the piece is leading me. I will start in a certain way and then allow the piece to evolve. Often it has a life of its own. I like to use classical references in unexpected and humorous ways and to juxtapose the old with the new. My homage to the Old Masters comes in part from their knowledge of what God looks like. Myths of all kinds, western and historical references, and personal experiences all blend together in my fascination for what we worship, our superstitions, and the search for luck.” Joan Arrizabalaga has been creating and showing her art for over four decades. Arrizabalaga creates both sculptural pieces and flat work using clay, wood, metal, fabric, machine and hand embroidery, and found objects. Known for artwork about Nevada and the Casinos, she also makes use of common gaming materials such as felt, dice, and cards.

Arrizabalaga has participated in many group and one-person exhibitions at the regional and national levels, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York. She is a graduate of the University of Nevada, and studied with Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm Pottery, Guerneville, California. Living in London, England, for 3 years in the 1970s, she was much inspired by the life and times, glitter, glitz, and art of the British Rock and Roll world. As wardrobe mistress and dresser to the stars at Harrah’s Reno, Arrizabalaga got a closer view of the classic casino finding a great source for ideas. Her art can be seen in numerous private, corporate, and public collections.

Stephen Reid is a visual artist whose work has been shown nationally and in Japan. His paintings reside in the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College as well as several private collections. He earned a MFA in 2006 from the University of Massachusetts and a BFA in 2001 from the Virginia Commonwealth University. He has taught as an adjunct instructor at Keene College in Keene, New Hampshire, and at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Reid has been the Artist Services Specialist with the Nevada Arts Council since 2017 where he manages the exhibition installations for the agency’s visual arts programs: the Nevada Touring Initiative-Traveling Exhibition and LXS-Legislative exhibition Series. He lives in Dayton, Nevada, with his family

Carson City Democrats Announces Office Hours

The Carson City Democratics has announced open office hours from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. seven days a week through Nov. 6. The office is located at 502 E. John St. Suite G.

Volunteer staff is available to provide signs, candidate information or voter registration forms. Everyone welcome.

If you want to register to vote or update your registration, visit the Nevada Secretary of State’s Office website at www.registertovotenv.gov. The June Primary Election is June 11, with early voting May 25 through June 7. The General Election is Nov. 5, 2024; early voting is Oct. 19- Nov. 1.

21 locations picked to get mural treatment at 2nd annual Carson City Murals & Music Festival

The Brewery Arts Center’s second annual Carson City Murals & Music Festival will bring live musical performances and as many as 21 new, colorful murals to Carson City beginning Thursday, Sept. 26 through Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024. This year’s festival artists will add to the 23 murals created at last year's inaugural festival.

Local, national and international artists will create murals in public spaces around Carson City. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet artists as they create their murals over the three three-day festival, including Jabi Corte from Spain; Priscilla Aldana G. (Prism) from Mexico; Charly Malpass from Truckee, Calif., Gregg Deal from the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and others.

The BAC announced Tuesday there will be 21 locations that will be getting the 2024 festival mural treatment. They are:

“I am excited to be paired with my long-time friends and family from the Brewery Arts Center to create magic on their campus,” said Edwin “Esco” Martinez, a participating artist based in Reno, Nevada. “I’m painting native imagery that represents diversity, unity, community, and love for the Eagle Valley. I’m excited to reunite and meet everyone involved in this year’s Murals & Music festival. See you all in the Capital City!”

The murals from 2023’s festival serve as a permanent outdoor art gallery. The murals painted during the 2024 festival will expand Carson City’s accessible public art for all to enjoy.

Nightly musical performances will also be available, including a headlining performance from Mike Clark & The Sugar Sounds on the outdoor stage at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday, Sept. 28. Festival goers can also participate in hands-on art experiences painting at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada and creating with clay at Ogres-Holm Pottery. Brewery Arts Center, Visit Carson City and Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space are partnering to produce the festival as a public art campaign that aligns with the city’s 2022-26 Arts and Culture Strategic Plan. The Carson City Murals & Music Festival returns to the capital city Sept. 26-28 for even more murals and live musical performances in time for the first full weekend of fall.

For the 2024 celebration, organizers are honored to welcome Spanish artist Jabi Corte, who has created large-scale murals throughout Europe and is the founder of the Cantamañanas International Urban Art Festival in Pamplona, the longest running festival of its kind in Spain, producing 20 events.

Jabi will be designing a site specific mural for the Carson City community and is excited to be coming to paint with the strong tie to the Basque culture he grew up in. He can be found on Instagram at @jabi_corte.

Organizers are also thrilled to have Dr. Chip Thomas and Gregg Deal joining us for the second annual 3-day festival. They will join another dozen local and regional artists.

Along with bringing beautiful art to public spaces, the event creates a collective identity and serves as a catalyst for continued revitalization and unity, crossing economic and social boundaries.

This event is a collaboration between the Brewery Arts Center, Visit Carson City and the Nevada Arts Council. Funding is supplemented by generous donations from local businesses and individuals.
