Annual Cops and Kids Sheriff’s Office open house returns Saturday May 11

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event provides a “fun and interactive environment for kids and their families to engage with law enforcement, while also promoting positive relationships between law enforcement and the community as a whole,” according to the sheriff’s office.

According to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, the event each year is vital to the relationships between the sheriff’s office and the community.

“The relationship that our children have with our officers is critical to our environment, especially in our schools,” Furlong said. “That relationship is being built with our School Resource Officers but that extends to all the other officers along with the resources we have available through our partnerships with nonprofits such as Ron Wood, the Boys and Girls Club, and more. This is a single spot for parents to bring kids meet officers and meet the nonprofits that serve our community.”

Various law enforcement departments including the K9 Unit, SWAT, traffic, and detectives will be available and children will have the opportunity to engage with patrol cars, SWAT vehicles, patrol cars, and more.

Construction of Muller Parkway in Douglas County to begin soon, officials say

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town. The decision comes as the County moves to fill its requirement to construct 2.4 miles of two-lane road by 2025.

In the coming days, we'll gather for a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the launch of this much-awaited project, celebrating its commencement and honoring its significance.

Phase 1A
This first phase (Phase 1A) of construction will take place between Buckeye Road and the Ashland Park housing development border near Toler Lane. This portion of the proposed route does not impact the flood plains, allowing the County to begin construction immediately. The decision to construct the other phases is pending approval from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and private adjacent land owners.

Two Carson High Swimmers Sign Division 1 Scholarships

Carson High School is pleased to announce Katarina Klatt and Brynn Russell will carry their academic and athletic talents on to the next level with Division 1 Scholarships. A short signing ceremony was held at the Carson Aquatic Center Wednesday, April 24, 2024.

Katarina Klatt’s dedication to the sport of swimming has earned her a well-deserved place at Northern Arizona University, where she will continue to shine as a competitive swimmer. Her journey has taken her to Junior Olympics, Far Western Championships, Nevada State Championships and championship meets across the nation. Her commitment to Northern Arizona University speaks to her talent and hard work in the pool. Her passion for Environmental Science demonstrates her commitment to making a positive impact on the world. This choice of major is indicative of her desire to address critical environmental issues and contribute to a sustainable future.

Brynn Russell has always wanted to swim at the collegiate level. Her dedication to the sport has taken her to Junior Olympics, Nevada High School State meets, Nevada Age group state meets and other championship swim meets across the nation. Her dedication to her sport is undeniable, and she is determined to continue her journey as a competitive swimmer while pursuing a career in nursing with a special emphasis in pediatrics at the University of Vermont. Along with her swimming career, Brynn’s leadership experience is a testament to her passion for making a positive impact. As the vice president and an event planner for Carson High School's National Honor Society (NHS), Brynn has honed her organizational skills through planning and executing various events that benefit both NHS and the wider community. Her dedication to volunteer work has been unwavering, and she leads by example, actively participating in NHS events and community service projects.

Both Brynn and Katarina (along with Larkin Russell and Alexandra Llamas-Cruz) have the Carson High school record in the 200 Freestyle Relay, and Katarina has the fastest 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly swim recorded for Carson High School, winning state last year in the 100 Butterfly. They now are among some of the top swimmers that will have been a part of the Carson High School legacy.

Despite Nevada opposition, USPS to move key mail operations from Reno to Sacramento

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is moving forward with its plan to transfer certain mail processing operations from Reno to Sacramento, a change that has drawn bipartisan opposition among Nevada elected officials over its potential impact on the region’s economy and fears that it would slow the processing of mail ballots.

The USPS said Tuesday that its Reno building will be converted into a local processing center — a facility that prepares mail before it is placed on carrier routes. The agency will also spend up to $13.4 million in Reno for new workplace amenities and expanded distribution capabilities, but said “the business case” supported moving other operations to California because most of the mail processed in Reno is destined for outside the region.

The change means that all mail sent from Northern Nevada will pass through Sacramento before reaching its destination. The proposal prompted fierce pushback from state and federal officials — including Gov. Joe Lombardo and Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar — who argued that severe winter weather between the two cities could make it difficult for mail to be delivered efficiently (there is only one interstate route between Sacramento and Reno, and it is sometimes closed during snowy conditions over the Donner Pass) and that it could adversely affect people who use the Postal Service to receive necessary goods, such as medication.

The USPS also said Tuesday that the change would not result in any layoffs of career employees, though it is unknown how many pre-career employees — entry-level positions — might be affected. A document from a USPS employee obtained by The Nevada Independent shows that the USPS expects the change to affect up to 67 career positions, which could include employee reassignments.

Officials have also raised concerns that it could affect the processing of widely used mail ballots, which under state law can be counted as long as they are postmarked by Election Day and received up to four days after the election. In a statement Tuesday, Aguilar said the Postal Service is “negligently interfer[ing] with functions vital to the electoral process.”

“Representatives from across Nevada have laid out the many logistical issues this move will bring, and I hope the USPS will reconsider this decision and instead invest further into existing Northern Nevada operations,” the statement read.

The Postal Service’s statement on Tuesday did not mention mail-in ballots, but the agency had previously said that the change would have no impact on the timeliness of mail delivery.

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) told reporters earlier this month that USPS officials said the implementation plan could begin in January, in which case mail ballots cast this year would not be affected.

Lombardo said in a statement that his administration “will continue to fight against mismanagement in Washington for timely and efficient mail services for Nevadans.”

Rosen said Tuesday that she “would explore all available options to prevent it from being implemented,” and said she is “outraged that out-of-touch Washington bureaucrats think they know what’s best for our state.” Rosen sits on the Senate committee that oversees the Postal Service.

In February, Rosen, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Rep. Mark Amodei (R-NV) wrote a letter to the Postal Service, requesting more information on a potential move’s impact on mail service reliability, mail-in ballots, the region’s economy and Postal Service jobs.

Weeks later, USPS officials held a briefing that Rosen panned as unhelpful. She told reporters that officials did not answer many questions directly and did not provide some of the data that the delegation asked for.

At a tense Senate hearing last week, Rosen accused Postmaster General Louis DeJoy of withholding information on how the agency determined that the proposal was necessary.

The USPS said Tuesday that the finalized plan came “following a thorough business review and solicitation of public feedback.”

Lyon County Sheriff: Silver Springs resident charged in fatal 2023 fentanyl overdose

A 32-year-old Silver Springs man was arrested Wednesday and booked for charges associated to a fentanyl drug overdose in December 2023, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Rose Tyler Maciel V, also known as Joseph Tyler, was identified as the person who is alleged to have sold Michael Fernandez of Silver Springs the fentanyl that caused his death, according to a news release from LCSO.

On December 11, 2023, Lyon County Sheriff's deputies, were called a residence in the 3700 Block of Citrus Street in Silver Springs for a reported overdose. Upon arrival, Fernandez, 22, was located and ultimately died.

In early January, 2024 toxicology test results revealed Fernandez's cause of death to be acute fentanyl intoxication, which is an overdose. With this information, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Special Investigations Unit began an investigation into the source of the fentanyl that caused Fernandez's death, the news release states.

During the investigation, Joseph Rose Tyler Maciel V, aka Joseph Tyler, was identified as the individual who sold Fernandez the fentanyl that caused his death, according to LCSO.

On Wednesday, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Special Investigation Unit conducted a traffic stop on Maciel V and was found to be in possession of a small amount of fentanyl. Maciel V was arrested and during a subsequent interview, admitted to selling Fernandez the fentanyl that caused his death.

Joseph Rose Tyler Maciel V was booked into the Lyon County Jail on the following charges:

— Making Available Controlled Substance Which Causes Death

— Possession of a Controlled Substance Schedule I-IV (Fentanyl)

He's being held on $102,500 bail.

'Walk Us Home 5K for Foster Homes' plus resource fair happening Saturday in Carson City at McFadden Plaza

The Division of Child and Family Services, Nevada’s Department of Health and Human Services, invites the community to participate in the 2nd annual “Walk Us Home” 5K for Foster Homes on Saturday, April 27, 2024 in Carson City.

The 5-kilometer run/walk will raise funds to send Northern Nevada children in foster care to Camp Rennervation, a summer camp operated by actor and Northern Nevada resident Jeremy Renner's charitable foundation. Prizes will be awarded to top finishers across multiple categories.

In addition to the 5K, CASA of Carson City is hosting their annual Resource Fair and Community Event "Planting the Seeds of Change." Live music, games and prizes for the children!

“The organizations in our community that service children and families are such a dynamic part of building healthy, strong family units. Understanding how to connect your child with therapeutic resources, information about saving for a child’s college fund, assisting youth and adults with disabilities to further their careers, and connecting our Veterans with local resources, is what we are trying to accomplish with this community event. Two Carson City residents identified in Wednesday's fatal crash on I-580

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two Carson City residents who died in a wrong way crash early Wednesday morning in Carson City.

The two are 36-year-old Alejandra Hernandez Valtierra and 48-year-old Viola Santoyo Huizar. Both died at the scene.

The crash, which happened at 4:51 a.m., involved two vehicles. One of the vehicles, a car that was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane, struck another vehicle, killing both drivers, according to Nevada State Police.

I-580 southbound near Snyder Avenue and Fairview Boulevard was closed for several hours as part of the investigation.

Nevada State Police is conducting an investigation. We will update with more information when it becomes available.

St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church in Carson City is having a huge rummage sale Saturday, April 27 at 8 am until 1:30 pm. This is a fundraiser by St. Paul's women's group, WELCA, in association with Thrivent. There will be a jewelry room and a boutique featuring decor de jour and collectibles.

Also available will be furniture, many power tools including wood working, housewares, electronics, plants and gardening, children's items, toys, books, games and clothing. Starting at 8 am attendees can fill a shopping bag with clothing for $5.

At 11 it will be $2 for a bag of clothing and $5 for anything that will fit in a grocery bag. We are always ready to seriously negotiate!! Come early to check out the bargains being offered and support a great cause.

March gaming revenue up slightly in Carson area, down 1.65 percent statewide

Carson City area casino gaming revenue was up slightly in March, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Statewide, revenue was down 1.65 percent compared to March 2023.

Casinos in Carson City, Gardnerville, Minden and all other areas of Douglas County except for South Shore Lake Tahoe report gaming generated revenue, also called "gaming win" of $11,274, 853 for the month, up .08 percent.

Elsewhere, gaming revenue was down 5.45 percent at South Shore Lake Tahoe and up 2.07 percent at North Shore Lake Tahoe. Reno area casinos report gaming revenue down 6.03 percent for the month, and Sparks, 1.34 percent.

Statewide Nevada’s nonrestricted gaming licensees reported a total “gaming win” of $1,290,406,695 for the month of March 2024. This amounts to a 1.65 percent decrease compared to March 2023, when licensees reported a gaming win of $1,312,049,411.

Carson City STEM teacher named finalist for national teaching award

The Carson City School District is pleased to announce Empire Elementary School’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Teacher Adrienne Wiggins has been selected as a Nevada finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the nation’s highest honors for teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer science.

Mrs. Wiggins has been at Empire Elementary School for the last 12 years and brought with her vision, commitment and passion to elevate the school and its students. She is particularly proud of the shift she has helped make at Empire when it met the requirements to be designated as an official Governor’s STEM School. That designation came based on national best practices for integrating STEM into daily classroom instruction.

Along the way, Mrs. Wiggins has been a classroom teacher, Math Instructional Coach and the school’s esteemed STEM instructional coach. Her approach, which incorporates real-world problem-solving and technology, has not only boosted her students' achievement but has also ignited a passion for science in her classroom.

State and Jurisdiction PAEMST Finalists represent the most outstanding teachers Nevada has to offer and serve as both a model and an inspiration to students and fellow teachers.

The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, recognizes outstanding teachers from across the United States and its territories. Finalists are selected for their deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and for their ability to motivate students to achieve high academic standards.

Mrs. Wiggins is one of four finalists from Nevada this year. Award winners will be selected from this group later in the year following a rigorous evaluation process. Winners will receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend a series of recognition events, and a $10,000 award from the NSF.

Nevada unemployment down slightly statewide in March, Carson City unchanged

Nevada's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in March 2024, which decreased by 0.1 percent from February 2024, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s March 2024 economic report.

The Carson City unemployment rate was 4.8 percent in March 2024, unchanged from 4.8 percent in February 2024, and from 4.8 percent in March 2023, non-seasonally adjusted.

The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 13 since February 2024 to a current level of 1,243 people, which is 3 less unemployed people than March 2023. The labor force in Carson City is currently 26,022 people, which is 15 less people than February 2024, and is up 39 people since March 2023.

Seasonally adjusted estimates account for regularly seen economic patterns, with the following estimates not seasonally adjusted.

In the three Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Reno had the lowest rate at 4.2 percent, followed by Carson City at 4.8 percent and Las Vegas had the highest unemployment rate at 5.1 percent.

Carson High debate team hosts upcoming fundraisers to send 10 students to Nationals

Carson High Debate continues its groundbreaking season. Competing at state for the first time since Covid the team advanced to final events in 4 separate events.

Ellie Dement, Emily Tran, Summer McGill, and Nasia Perkins represented Carson in final rounds taking 6th, 4th, and 2nd place in their speech events.

In addition, Viviana Castro finished 5th in Lincoln Douglas Debate Summer and Nasia were undefeated in Policy Debate, claiming the title of state champions. Overall the Carson team finished 2nd at State, its best showing ever. This group will join five other debaters to represent Carson High and Nevada at four separate nationals tournaments starting in May.

The team will be hosting several fundraisers to help cover the costs of our upcoming trips. The first will be Paint for Debate, a guided painting class held at the Brewery Arts Center May 14th, tickets are $30. The team will be hosting its annual Debatable Extravaganza in Senator Square of the High School May 22nd. This event includes an award dinner, interactive speeches, and presentations from the national qualifiers.

Tickets are $10. Finally, the team’s largest event will be the Carson High Show and Shine car show held Saturday May 25th at Carson High.

Anyone interested in registering a car would pay a $25 entry fee and spectators can attend free of charge. Anyone interested in these events or sponsoring the teams trips can contact the head coach Patrick Mobley at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us.

Carson Medical Group moves to new campus in June

Carson Medical Group broke ground on their new 31,000 square foot facility off old Hot Springs Road in October 2022 and this June it will officially open its doors to patients.

The facility, located at 1946 Old Hot Springs Road, will house the primary care physicians, their Ear/Nose/Throat practice, as well as the CMG+ walk-in clinic.

Just over a decade ago, Carson Medical Group’s pediatrics and OBGYN clinics moved to their current locations near Carson Tahoe Hospital, where they will remain.

However, the new facility will be taking on the rest of Carson Medical Group’s Carson City practices currently housed on Mountain Street.

Carson Medical Group has been serving the region since 1974 with locations in Carson City, Reno and Minden.

Clear Creek Bowmen Cancer Shoot this Sunday

Clear Creek Bowmen Cancer Shoot is this Sunday April 28 at the Carson City Archery Range.

This is an unmarked yardage shoot with 35 3-D targets. Cost is $25 for adults with discounts for youth and families. Kids 11 and under are free.

Belt Buckles will be awarded to 1st place shooters in all adult and youth classes. 2nd and 3rd place shooters receive T-shirts.

Lunch will be available for $8.

There will be a raffle with some great prizes. All proceeds will go to Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center. The Carson City Centennial Park Archery Range is located on Centennial Drive in Carson City.

Nevada Artists Association featured artist shows and reception happening May 4-5

The Nevada Artists Association is excited to announce two Featured Artist Shows beginning Saturday, May 4 by Carson City artists, Cynthia Brenneman and Bruce Nelson.

Cynthia Brenneman’s "What did you do for Covid Relief?" watercolor painting show is a small anthology of what we did when isolated for Covid. Obviously, living in the Northern Nevada mountains, many of us hiked, skied, fished, and continued to pursue the many outdoor activities available during Covid.

For Brenneman, painting still lifes is a form of meditation. Losing herself for hours painting makes the days go by faster than worrying about what is next. She has tried many art forms (glass blowing, neon, oil painting, floor cloths, encaustic painting, murals, doll making, greeting cards, felting, graphic design, beading, etc), but keeps coming back to watercolors. Still lifes in particular, hold her interest.

This series was only intended to be a couple of paintings, but new ideas kept appearing. Brenneman finally called an end to the series even though more ideas were still bouncing around in her head.

Bruce Nelson is a photographer and printer. He has photographed buildings (particularly windows), landscapes, trees and flowers on the Atlantic coast, in the Appalachians, and now in the high desert. Eight years ago, he began experimenting with using printing techniques for his photographs, including blueprints (cyanotypes), photogravure, palladium, platinum, silver, copper, and iron.

He is currently working with close-up photography and infrared photography and prints with botanical teas made from various plants gathered on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. Bruce’s daughter, Nora Nelson is a hydrologist with the National Park Service. She is a skier, biker, hiker, and nature photographer and assists Bruce with his printing techniques.

The paintings and photographs from these artists can be seen at the Nevada Artists Association Gallery, Brewery Arts Center Campus, 449 W. King Street, Carson City, from May 4 through June 13. Gallery hours are 12-4pm.

A reception for Cynthia Brenneman and Bruce Nelson will occur on May 5, Cinco de Mayo, from 2-4. The Brewery Arts Center will also be holding Cinco de Mayo events from 12-5.
