Carson City welcomes first Wreaths Across America ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery
Wreaths Across America came to Carson City's Lone Mountain Cemetery Saturday morning thanks to the Carson City Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol who organized the event locally.
Each December, the national non-profit organization coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as more than 1,200 locations across the U.S., at sea and abroad.
Numerous volunteers of all ages placed wreaths on veterans’ graves, thanking them for their service with a salute and moment of silence. Carson City resident and Nevada National Guard's Joint Operations Center Command Sgt. Major Paul Kinsey was the featured speaker.
“This event is a great way to give back to the community,” said Michael Hertel, the operations officer of the Carson City Sea Cadets program. “Honoring any veteran is a tremendous deed, and it’s a way of thanking those men and women for the sacrifice they made for our country.”
Wreaths Across America partners with like-minded organizations that share common missions and goals to build awareness for the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, and that of their families.
Alexia Hertel, wife of Michael Hertel and mother of three young children described the impact this event has on their family.
“We are a dedicated Army family with many years of service,” she said. “We like to encourage our kids to recognize the veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country. It’s also really cool to see so many other volunteers donating their time and efforts to the wreaths.”
