Carson City area weather: Forecasters advise against weekend travel, snow through Monday
With the arrival of Thanksgiving, forecasters say periods of snow and hazardous travel conditions will continue through the holiday weekend and into Monday, prompting the National Weather Service to call for another round of winter storm watches and travel advisories.
For Thursday night, snow showers may begin to impact Highway 50 and I-80 corridors from about 7 p.m. through 10 a.m., Friday morning. Outside of those areas, general light snow showers to continue through Friday afternoon with little if any accumulation outside the Sierra.
Temperatures will remain very cold with overnight lows dependent on cloud cover. Areas that clear may see single digits if not below zero readings Friday and Saturday mornings, NWS forecasters say.
The weather service advises that the best travel period would be Friday into early Saturday because come Saturday afternoon, things will deteriorate rapidly both in the Sierra and on the valley floors, especially in around Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and into Lyon County.
Then the next major storm is set to arrive and looks to be a little slower, arriving in the Sierra during the late afternoon to early evening Saturday. This storm has prompted winter storm watches for western Nevada and the Sierra, with 4 to 10 inches of snow expected on the valley floor and up to a quarter inch of ice.
Due to the nature of this storm, the weather service says power outages and tree damage are possible due to ice and snow accumulations. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the commute at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and motorists are urged to stay off the roads if they can or get a head start from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning.
For Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, heavy snow with accumulations of 8 to 16 inches at lake level and 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet is possible. The watch runs from Saturday afternoon through Monday morning.
For now the Weather Service strongly advises against any motor traveling Saturday afternoon through Monday. For the latest travel and road information go to www.NVRoads.com or call 511. Check back for updates.
