Weather systems to bring wind and rain to Carson City region, snow at Lake Tahoe
Rain and snow are in the forecast this weekend, prompting a Wind Advisory extending through the Sierra and into the Carson City region, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A larger weather system is expected to move into the region after Monday.
Winds will begin to increase Friday morning along the Sierra Front and continue through Saturday morning. Gusts will be from the southwest, 20 to 50 mph with 60 mph gusts in wind prone areas, according
Snow levels will lower with the weather systems moving in, making it difficult for Thanksgiving holiday travelers going over the Sierra. Snow levels may drop as low as 5,500 feet around the Lake Tahoe Basin and to valley floors around Susanville.
Periods of light snow will begin tonight in the Sierra and continue through Sunday night. Storm amounts during the weekend for the Lake Tahoe Basin above 7,000 could be between six inches a foot, affecting travel over Highway 50, Interstate 80 and other mountain highways.
For areas north of Lake Tahoe, several inches are possible west of Highway 395 above 5,500 feet affecting Yuba Pass and Fredonyer Summit. Snow levels may drop to valley floors north of Susanville with light snow in the desert valleys of northeastern California and western Nevada.
