Carson City ranks second for technology use in government
Carson City has received national recognition as a “Top Ranked Digital City Government.”
Carson City finished 2nd in its size category, cities between 30,000 and 74,999, in a survey conducted by Center for Digital Government. The Center is a national research and advisory institute that focuses on information technology policies and best practices.
As explained by Todd Sander, the Center’s Director of Digital Communities. “Cities that are investing in technology are capturing cost savings that are critical to continuity of operations and their ability to meet higher demand for services. The highest-ranking cities in the survey showed great strides in consolidating, enabling shared services, government transparency and
communications interoperability. We applaud these innovators as they work in the spirit of collaboration to provide extraordinary value to constituents despite budget setbacks.”
Carson City high ranking was due to several dozen technology initiatives. Examples include:
- Fiber optic infrastructure projects involving private and public partnerships.
- Several “Cloud-based” systems implemented in the past year.
- Grant-funded initiatives, including a four-county wireless network and advanced library automation.
- Cost savings through revised maintenance contracts, selective use of refurbished equipment, and a high degree of virtualization.
- Expansion of wireless networks for both internal and citizen use.
This is the second time Carson City has been recognized as Top Ranked Digital City Government. The City finished 7th in 2010.
