Carson City unemployment plunges to 6.8 percent in October
Unemployment in Carson City fell by 2.7 percentage points relative to October 2013, to 6.8 percent, the largest year-over-year decline for Carson City since March 1999, according to figures released Friday by Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Nevada’s unemployment rate continued to fall in October, registering at a seasonally adjusted 7.1 percent, the lowest it has been since June 2008. October marks the 45th consecutive month of year-over-year unemployment rate declines, dating back to February 2011. The unemployment rate in October 2013 stood at 9.4 percent.
“I am pleased to see further signs of underlying economic progress for the Silver State. Through the first ten months of the year, we have added 40,000 new jobs across the state, putting more Nevadans back to work. While we continue to be one of the fastest growing states in the nation, we must remain focused on workforce development and private sector job creation so that all Nevadans can find good-paying, sustainable employment. We are moving in the right direction and must continue to make positive strides toward building a stronger, more vibrant, Nevada,” said Governor Brian Sandoval.
Nevada’s three metropolitan areas also experienced positive results in October’s unemployment readings.
The Reno- sparks unemployment rate fell 2.7 percentage points over the year, to 6.1 percent, the lowest October reading since 2007.
Las Vegas’ unemployment rate fell to 6.8 percent, down 2.8 percentage points relative to last year, the single largest unemployment rate decline on a year-over-year basis on record for Las Vegas (with information back to 1990), said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
“Nevada’s job growth rank has been steadily climbing, outperforming 48 other states in terms of employment growth of late,” Anderson said. “After a long delay, this strong employment growth has finally led to an accelerated decline in the state’s unemployment rate.”
Anderson also noted that for the first time since 2007, the unemployment rate for all 17 of Nevada’s counties fell below 10 percent in September and October.
