Dayton Rice Project Feeds Families for Three Months
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dayton Ward, is hosting its second annual fundraiser and rice-canning event to help support the Dayton Food Pantry.
The Dayton Rice Project consists of a fundraiser to obtain the needed funds to purchase bulk rice and canning supplies. “Church and community members are encouraged to abstain from food for one or more meals and donate the money that would have been spent on food to support the project,” says Pam Neumeister, Dayton Ward Humanitarian Specialist.
Donated funds can be dropped off from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Sunday, November 25, in the East Foyer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 304 Driftwood Way, Dayton.
Neumeister says 100 percent of the funds collected will be used to purchase bulk rice and canning materials. Volunteers will convene on Saturday, December 1, to break the bulk rice into #10 cans, equal to about six pounds each. All supplies are USDA certified and will be canned in an approved kitchen located at Sutro Elementary School.
Shawn Heusser, Bishop of one of the local organizations, says, “Providing service to others is central to the Mormon belief of following the example of Jesus Christ. Assisting the Dayton Food Pantry to help families is one way of serving others.” In 2011, the Dayton Rice Project supplied enough rice to help 250 families for three months. Canned rice resulting from the project will be distributed on December 15.
"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints members have always shared their knowledge, resources, and expertise to improve the quality of life in our communities. The Silver Stage and Dayton Pantry would not be able to provide a stress free environment without this support and we are extremely grateful," said Freida Carbery, Volunteer Coordinator for the Healthy Communities Coalition, which operates the Dayton Food Pantry.
Financial donations or volunteers to help with the canning process can be coordinated through Pam Neumeister, Dayton Ward Humanitarian Specialist.
