Carson City's Advocates to End Domestic Violence receives $20K grant in October campaign
Throughout October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month the Mary Kay Foundation is awarding 150, $20,000 grants to domestic violence shelters nationwide including Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence.
“Advocates is incredibly grateful for support from the Mary Kay Foundation and its continued commitment to break the cycle of domestic violence,” said Lisa Lee, director of Advocates to End Domestic Violence. “Advocates is thankful for the continued support of The Mary Kay Foundation in relation to all services and programs targeting domestic violence.”
Advocates to End Domestic Violence provides shelter and support services to victims of domestic violence within Carson City and surrounding communities. Advocates provided nearly 7,000 nights of shelter during the calendar year of 2016 with an average stay of 48 nights along with case management, court advocacy, life skills and parenting support.
More than 700 domestic violence shelters nationwide applied for the Mary Kay Foundation shelter grants this year, said Anne Crews, board member of The Mary Kay Foundation and Vice President of Public Affairs for Mary Kay Inc.
The number of applications “demonstrates the overwhelming need to maintain critical services and provide a safe haven for the survivors of an epidemic that impacts one in every four women,” said Crews.
“Working to prevent and end domestic violence is a cornerstone of The Foundation, Mary Kay Inc., and for countless members of our independent sales force. Since 2000, the Foundation has invested tens of millions of dollars in our shelter grant program and, without a doubt, we know these funds make a difference in homes and communities across the country,” said Crews.
The 150 grants of $20,000 each amounts to $3 million and brings the total investment of the Mary Kay Foundation’s annual shelter program to nearly $42 million.
