Concerns grow as deer with rope wrapped around antlers wanders Carson City's west side
Dayton resident Connie Higgons Corley was preparing for a ghost walk Saturday morning along the west side of Carson City when she saw an adult male deer struggling with black ropes wrapped around his antlers.
Corley said she is concerned the deer is unable to break free from the tangled ropes or thick strings and witnessed it having trouble walking. She suspects the ropes are from Halloween decorations. The deer was spotted Saturday a street over from the Sears-Ferris House on West Third Street.
“It was really sad to watch because he was tripping on it while walking,” she said.
Corley contacted Channel 2 in Reno, which contacted NDOW. This was the message from Channel 2 on its Facebook page:
“NDOW tells us that since the deer is not currently in any danger, its movements are not hindered at all, that attempting to tranquilize and remove the netting could actually be more dangerous. The deer could run into traffic, etc. So for the time being, it is safer for him to not bring in any human intervention.”
Corley isn't the only one who has seen the deer. The issue is also being discussed on the Carson City SPCA Facebook page here.
Corley hopes someone will be able to do something about it.
“It’s bad enough they keep getting hit by cars. I’m afraid he’s going to get stuck to a tree branch and he won’t be able to get out,” said Corley.
