Donations sought: Taste of Downtown forced to move event date, causes budget shortfall
This summer, Carson City and surrounding communities have experienced domestic violence at alarming rates. Kirsten Krasovec and Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell were both killed at the hands of domestic violence abusers, and local shelters have been filled to capacity for months now.
Often times, domestic violence shelters are a victims' final and ONLY option for leaving an abusive relationship. On top of the physical, verbal, and emotional abuse victims endure, abusers often control the family finances as well. Victims may not have access to their money, may not be allowed to work, or have lost jobs due to the abuse. Leaving home and renting an apartment, or even a hotel room, is often impossible. Having safe emergency shelters for these families can be a matter of life or death. Providing necessary services to help victims heal, break patterns, and become self-sufficient can be very costly for non-profits, and we need your help to ensure that our community members have a safe place to go.
Here at Advocates to End Domestic Violence, we rely on fundraisers, grants, Classy Seconds, and community support to fund our programs and services for victims of family violence and sexual assault. The Taste of DownTown, our biggest annual fundraiser, is essential to the daily client services offered by AEDV.
This year, forces beyond our control made it necessary to move the Taste to July 23, resulting in a shortfall for 2015/2016 fiscal year of desperately needed Taste revenue. We may be forced to limit many services needed by our clients, such as purchasing their birth certificates and ID cards, much of the transportation we typically provide, perishable food items, and many other essential services not allowable with grant funds. We are turning to the community and asking for your help to fill these needs.
— Your $10 donation could provide antibiotics for a sick child pending Medicaid.
— Your $25 donation could provide a victim with milk, cheese, eggs, bread, and frozen food to feed her family the first few days in the shelter.
— Your $50 donation could provide month long bus passes for 2 victims for job training and job searching.
— Your $100 donation could provide safe, emergency shelter for a family of 4 while they recover and move forward; or clothing for 5 victims of sexual assault to wear home from a forensic examination.
Bottom line, we need your help! Your donation, large or small, will help families within our community. Make a gift online today! Go here to make a donation.
