Gusty winds may whip up dust around Carson City into tonight
Low pressure will move through northern California and northwest Nevada Monday, producing gusty winds and hazardous boating conditions for Lake Tahoe and Pyramid, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect.
In addition to the winds, the best chance for rain and high elevation snow is north of Interstate 80 from Monday afternoon to early Tuesday morning. Rainfall amounts up to 0.50 inch are possible in Lassen and Plumas counties, with less than 0.10 inch elsewhere.
Snow levels will remain near and above 7,000 feet, but could briefly drop as low as 6,000 to 6,500 feet late Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
According to a briefing at 9:44 a.m. Monday, models are a bit stronger on the winds expected for Monday afternoon and evening. Peak gusts in wind prone areas may reach 60 mph with 35-45 mph gusts in the valleys. Strongest winds will arrive from 6 to 10 p.m. which is the time the trough will pass over the Northern Sierra, according to the weather service.
The main concerns are to travel for high profile vehicles along Highway 395 and Interstate 580 from Lassen County through Western Nevada and into Mono County. Blowing dust down wind of dry lake beds may reduce visibility on I-80 east of Fernley, Highway 50 east of Carson City and Highway 395 north of Fallon. Lake Wind advisories remain in effect for Tahoe and Pyramid, where waves could reach as high as four feet.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms are still on track for today with the best chances of showers north of Interstate 80. However, forecasters believe there will be a period of showers along the west shore of Lake Tahoe this evening. Snow levels will likely be too high for accumulations on roads, though a period of rain and snow shower mix may impact Donner, Echo and the Mt. Rose summit Monday night.
