Hundreds line up for early voting in Carson City
Hundreds made their way to the Carson City Courthouse today, the first day for early voting in Nevada.
A record number of people could be voting in this election, said Alan Glover, Carson City Clerk-Recorder.
"I think it's going to be high again, just like 08. I see maybe a 90 percent turnout when this is done," Glover said. "I think the Senate race is cranking them out."
Voter Andrew Palmer said he was surprised to see the line as big as it was when he arrived, going out the door of the Carson City Courthouse. The 19-year-old University of Nevada Reno student said this is his first general election to vote in and that he had voted before in the primary.
As a Democrat, Palmer said he has watched the Senate and race for governor closely and will vote accordingly. Education is one of the areas he is most concerned about, he added.
Meanwhile Republicans Steve and Patty Knight of Carson City were among the first in line to vote, each saying their votes are against Harry Reid in the race for Senate.
Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Gibbons was in line ahead of voter Andrew Palmer. He noted that he arrived early on Saturday to get a snapshot of how many people will turn out for the election.
"I was surprised to see the line out the door," Gibbons said.
Registered voters who don't want to wait until Election Day, Nov. 2, to cast their ballots can go to the courthouse at 885 E. Musser Street to vote today through Oct. 24. The hours are as follows: today until 4 p.m.; Oct. 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday through Friday, Oct. 18-22, and Oct. 25-29, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
