Carson City Sheriff’s Reserve Commander Crawford receives Governor’s Points of Light Award
Sheriff Ken Furlong is pleased to announce that Carson City Sheriff’s Office Reserve Commander Tom Crawford was the recipient of the Governor’s Points of Light Award, Volunteer Manager of the year.
Commander Crawford has been responsible for the Uniform Reserves of the Sheriff’s Office since 2005 and made significant contributions to the community as a whole. During his tenure, Tom has overseen the activities of over 150 reserves, many of whom who have gone on to become full time Deputy Sheriff’s here in the community, and surrounding jurisdictions.
Commander Crawford is credited with building the Reserve Program from the bottom up. He began by recruiting the highest qualified persons and focused his efforts toward safety and training, and establishing a local state certified Reserve Peace Officers Standards and Training Academy.
The academy provides reserve recruits, often with full-time jobs away from the Sheriff’s Office, with a minimum of 160 hours in Nevada law, defensive tactics, conflict resolution, patrol operations, first aid, and many more topics.
The success of Tom’s reserve program has resulted in “freeing up officers” who are now assigned a variety of functions, including patrol, detention, and specialized enforcement. Tom’s unit also leads many community wide activities including drug roundups, carnivals, parades, Halloween, Easter Egg Hunt, and Christmas Eve Santa visits to children in Carson. Under his leadership, Tom is encouraging the future generation of law enforcement to train hard, act in good faith, be responsible for each other and be responsible for the community they serve.
Congratulations Commander Tom Crawford.
