NHP provides safety strategy as Street Vibrations rolls through Northern Nevada

With tens of thousands of motorcyclists in Reno, Carson City, Virginia City and Tahoe for Street Vibrations this week, the Nevada Highway Patrol has developed a safety strategy of tips for bikers and motorists.

The idea is to reduce distractions by keeping a sharp focus on all motor vehicles on the road, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. Roads throughout Northern Nevada will be filled with motorcyclists and motorists attending the events in Reno, Carson City and Virginia City. Here's a breakdown of what drivers should keep in mind:

For the motorcyclist
— U.S. Department of Transportation approved helmets must be worn by the driver and passenger Face shields or safety goggles must also be worn

— Passing other vehicles within the same lane, or splitting lanes, is illegal

— Every motorcycle driver must possess a valid motorcycle license/endorsement

— Be cognizant of all traffic; don’t ride in blind spots

— Riding on the shoulder, in the emergency lanes, bikes lanes, is also illegal

— Be extra cautious when navigating curves in the roadway; some motorcyclists tend to lean into opposing/adjacent travel lanes

— Motorcycles must come to a complete stop at a stop sign or before making a right turn from a red light

— Ride with lights on and wear reflective clothing in an effort to become more visible

— Riders are encouraged to wear protective clothing

— Turn signals must be utilized for all lane changes

— Don’t drink and drive

For the motorists:
— Be extra cautious when making lane changes as motorcycles are less visible and more difficult to see than other vehicles

— Turn signals must be utilized for all lane changes

— Motorcyclists often down shift their transmission to reduce their speed, so brake lights aren’t often visible during those times

— Be certain to scan for motorcycles before entering an intersecting roadway

— Designate a safe and sober driver if alcohol is involved

— Always wear a seat belt and ensure everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained
