Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong reports two people are dead after the vehicle they were riding drove off a cliff and rolled at Goni Canyon Road in northeast Carson City early Monday morning.
Furlong said there was one survivor of the accident, which occurred about a mile into the canyon.
An adult male survivor managed to walk out of the canyon, where he was spotted by a nearby resident and from there a call placed to emergency dispatch at 4:44 a.m.
Once on scene, first responders were able to locate the vehicle and confirm the two fatalities.
Both deceased are male, the sheriff said, and one is confirmed to be an adult. The age of the second deceased male is unknown at this time.
Furlong said the vehicle rolled several hundred feet off the road into the canyon, coming to rest on its top.
Emergency personnel located a vehicle approximately 1-1/2 miles up Goni Canyon. One deceased male was located at the vehicle. After searching the area, a second deceased male was located approximately 100 yards away up a steep embankment, said Furlong. The SUV style vehicle was overturned at the bottom of the canyon.
The male victim who survived the accident was treated for minor injuries by Carson City fire department medical ersonnel, but declined to be transported to an area hospital.
This accident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, and being assisted by accident reconstruction team from the Nevada Highway Patrol. The names/identities of all three persons involved in the accident are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
