Feds Feed Families Food Drive Carson City campaign begins Saturday
The annual “Feds Feed Families” food drive to benefit the hungry in Carson City, will accept food donations through October 2, with a special push for donations and fresh produce on Aug. 1 and 8 at the Third and Curry Street Farmer’s Market in Carson City.
This is Carson City's fifth annual Feds Feed Families Food Drive, which is organized by federal employees who donate their time to run a food drive at a time of the year when food pantries run low. This year the food drive focus is on making sandwiches. Ron Wood's food pantry has lots of bread thanks to the generous donations from the Sara Lee Bakery Group in Carson City. What's missing is what goes in the middle.
Donations will benefit the Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Friends In Service Helping, also known as FISH.
"We really need the canned meats, tuna, peanut butter and jelly, ham, those are all really good," said Pam Winebarger, the pantry manager.
Ron Wood's food pantry is located at 2621 Northgate Lane Suite 62. The pantry provides for emergency need and is one Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30-4 p.m. and Wednesday from 1-4:30 p.m. The pantry serves 4500 people each month. Canned chili and dry goods like rice and beans are also popular. In addition, pet food, both dry and canned, are needed to help the dogs and cats that might go hungry otherwise.
Linda Marrone, the Carson City Farmer's Market Manager, is coordinating fresh produce donations from the Carson City Farmer's Market for the third year in a row.
"Our farmers have big hearts, and we have developed a system where we collect donations and purchase fresh produce but we also request farmer donations. That way, the food pantries receive great quality fresh produce, and the farmers go home with pockets half-full too." Donations for fresh produce can be made at Marrone's stand at the farmer's market on Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. Those who donate are eligible to win a market raffle prize.
Tony Zehring, the manager at the Friends in Service Helping pantry, said that his pantry is running a little short on food, and that fresh produce will be welcomed. "We thank the Farmer's Market for helping us out; we can always use the fresh produce, either in the pantry or in our dining room. We accept donations 9-12 and 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday." The FISH dining hall located at 138 E. Long St. serves more than 80 meals a day at their dining hall and the pantry provides 410,346 meals annually to needy individuals and families.
Feds Feed Families is organized through the voluntary efforts of federal employees. Participating agencies in Carson City include the General Services Administration, the Bureau of Reclamation, US Geological Survey and USDA-Rural Development. Other agencies are invited to participate. For more information, contact food drive coordinators Kelly Clark at 887-1222 Ext. 130 or Debbie Blake at 882-3436.
