Fire crews in Douglas County respond to Diamond fire in Alpine County near Markleeville
East Fork Fire Protection District crews in Douglas County were called late afternoon Thursday to a wildfire in the area of Diamond Valley School in Alpine County near Markleeville.
Thunderstorms moved into the region and over Alpine County and southern Douglas County Thursday afternoon. Reports initially came into dispatch that the fire was caused by lightning. Multiple reports of the fire came from residents in the Gardnerville Ranchos, the Carson Valley Times reports.
According to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the brush fire is near Diamond Valley School and started after a lightning strike in the Markleeville area.
The National Weather Service issued a weather statement earlier Thursday about the potential for thunderstorms in the region, spanning from Lake Tahoe to Alpine and Mono counties.
A Red Flag Warning for the region, including Carson City, Douglas, Alpine and Mono counties, is in effect from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday due to the threat of thunderstorms.
