Carson City arrests: Man jailed for DUI, reckless driving after racing in restaurant parking lot
A 23-year-old Indian Hills man was arrested Sunday night for misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving without a valid driver’s license after racing in the parking lot of a South Carson Street restaurant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, a deputy on patrol saw two sedans leave a restaurant parking lot in the 1000 block of South Carson Street at around 10 p.m.. The deputy heard tires screeching and looked toward the parking lot and saw two sedans leave at a high rate of speed. The cars were racing through the parking lot and spinning their tires.
An assisting deputy began following one of the cars, and another deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Honda hatchback. The Honda turned westbound through the parking lot and continued at a high rate of speed, turning northbound onto Carson Street and then back to the parking lot.
The deputy followed the Honda into the parking lot with their emergency overhead lights. The Honda continued through the parking lot at an unsafe rate of speed and then parked in front of the restaurant. The officer stopped behind the car. The driver and passenger attempted to get out of the car, with the deputy telling them to remain in the car.
The officer made contact with the driver who identified himself. The deputy advised why he was stopped and asked what he was doing. The man admitted he and his friend, the driver of the other sedan, were racing in the parking lot, the arrest report states.
While the officer was speaking with the suspect, he could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath. The officer asked for his driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance. The man told the officer he did not have a valid license because he had failed the driver’s test twice.
The suspect was asked if he had been drinking. The man said he had approximately seven beers at the restaurant. Due to him admitting to drinking prior to driving his car, he was asked if he would voluntarily perform standardized field sobriety tests. He agreed and showed signs of impairment and was arrested at 10:25 p.m. He provided a preliminary breath test with a .181. At jail he provided evidentiary breath tests of .138 and .147, the arrest report states. Bai: $1,632.
