Carson City authorities investigate dog attack
A dog that had apparently bit a person earlier tonight attacked a Carson City deputy when he responded to a separate civil dispute just inside the gate of a 5th Street home. The dog was fatally shot.
The deputy was bit and sustained multiple wounds by the large shepherd/Labrador dog on the lower calf area. The dog apparently cornered the officer within 10 feet inside the gated yard.
"The officer was unable to stop the dog," said Sheriff Ken Furlong, who was at the scene.
Neighbors reported hearing two shots fired shortly before 10 p.m. at the 5th Street and Harbin street home, which is occupied by an elderly woman. There are approximately five dogs that live in the home. Authorities will attempt to contact the person who was bit by the dog earlier tonight.
The elderly woman admitted the dog had bit a person within an hour before biting the deputy, Furlong said.
There are humanitarian issues involved with the dogs as well, Furlong said, and the matter will be handled with Carson City Animal Control.
"The family has taken the dogs and Animal Control will work with the family on humanitarian issues," said Furlong.
The attack on the deputy and on the other person is under investigation.
