Carson City area weather: Hot temperatures ahead prompt NWS heat advisory for region
The Carson City region and much of western and northern Nevada may experience the hottest days of the year over the next couple days, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory from Sunday afternoon to Monday night.
Afternoon highs will be in the upper 90s to 105 degrees with overnight lows in the mid to upper 60s, according to the weather service. The heat advisory runs from Sunday, 1 p.m. to Monday, 11 p.m.
The weather service says isolated thunderstorms are possible both days. Temperatures will be cooler around the Lake Tahoe area, with highs in the low to mid 80s.
Some health impacts are possible for those sensitive to heat or without effective cooling. The weather service advises people to take extra precautions if working or spending time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Young children and pets
should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.
The American Red Cross advises the following:
— Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
— Eat small meals and eat more often.
— Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.
— Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.
— Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.
— Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.
— Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.
— Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.
