Under a crescent moon in the thick of summer, Carson City was alive Wednesday night with great music, food, friends and the very best representation of community and spirit.
The second annual Concert Under the Stars, a benefit for the Greenhouse Project, had that certain something something to it. Common ground, community mindedness and promise come to mind.
Pioneering 1960s Bay Area band Sons of Champlin was the apex to a wonderful evening enjoyed by nearly 350 people at Adele's Restaurant and Lounge.
Carson City knows how to throw a party for the good of the cause, and Concert Under the Stars may very well be on its way to becoming the followup summer event fundraiser to a Taste of Downtown. We're hoping it does. Wednesday was the beacon of things to come.
According to the Greenhouse Project Web site, the concept began in 2008 as the Carson City Cultural Commission, an advisory board to the Carson City Board of Supervisors, sought to integrate civic, cultural and economic development.
Cultural Commission member Karen Abowd proposed that the Commission undertake a project to increase agricultural and horticultural arts in Carson City. To this end, a Special Citizen Action Group of more than 35 members was formed and, in February of 2009, the group presented the project to the Board of Supervisors. The project won the Board’s approval together with its commitment of staff resources to aid in establishing a community greenhouse, according to the Web site.
A vision was put forward that combined ideas to engage the entire community in a cooperative, healthy way. The project has since expanded to include educational and vocational programs that will ultimately serve as a source of fresh produce for local food banks and school programs, according to the web site.
