What today's election might say about the Nugget Project's future
Despite the efforts of some citizens to get the Nugget Project to be put to a vote of the people, you won't find it on the ballot when you go and vote today.
But the results of this primary election might tell us a little about the public's sentiment concerning this project.
Out of the nine candidates running for the two open seats on the Carson City Board of Supervisors, only one — Karen Abowd — has expressed full support for the Nugget Project. The rest are either skeptical or outright opposed.
If Abowd manages to pull down a majority or strong plurality of votes against her five rivals in Ward 1, then that might signal that there is what Richard Nixon coined a "silent majority" in favor of going ahead with the project.
On the other hand, if Abowd performs poorly despite raising significant campaign funds, that might give pause to the current board members about pushing this project through without a public vote.
Another candidate to watch is Day Williams, who is spearheading the effort to put the Nugget Project question on the ballot. If his outspoken opposition to this project propels him to a majority in the three-way primary for Ward 3, it would be another clue as to how the public feels about this project.
So it could be an interesting night to watch vote totals roll in. Stay tuned.
