Carson City Farmer's Market returns this Saturday with new safety guidelines in place
The Carson Farmer's Market is back this Saturday morning, bringing fresh, locally grown produce to the community.
The Farmer's Market is requiring customers to adhere to social distancing guidelines in order for the market to continue through the summer and stay open.
The Farmer's Market announced their Top 10 Guidelines Today, which are as follows:
- If you are sick, stay home and ask a friend or family member to pick things up for you instead
- We highly recommend everyone to wear masks
- We will have hand washing stations and hand sanitizer throughout the market for customers to use
- Maintain 6 feet of space from other shoppers and allow others their space when shopping
- You will not be able to spend time socializing or linger at the farmers’ market
- Shop quickly to limit crowding
- No sampling of the products
- Do not touch anything for sale before you buy it. The farmer/vendor will pick out what you want and bag it for you
- Your reusable bags will not be allowed to be handled by vendors; you will have to place your product in your own bag
- Wait outside the booth until it is free of other shoppers, then take your turn
In addition, the Farmer's Market asks to please remember to wash your reusable bags before coming to the market, wash all produce thoroughly before using it, and remember that pets are not allowed at the market (service animals are exempt).
According to their Facebook page, the Farmer's Market will be available Saturdays through the season from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At the moment there is a lot up in the air regarding vendors. According to Market Manager Breana Coons, at this time under the city and state's directive artisan vendors will not be allowed.
This includes vendors such as jewelry makers, crafts, etc.
“The city has asked us to keep it to a minimum for now,” said Coons. “We’re only allowing farmers and people who would make the item out of their grown product, as well as cottage food producers.”
Cottage food production includes things such as jams, jellies, preserves, candies, nuts and nut mixes, dried herbs and seasoning mixes, certain baked goods, cereals, and more so long as they are registered with the state.
There is a meeting with state officials this week, said Coons, so directives could change. At this time, state officials are now requiring a temporary health permit for food vendors and meat vendors, which they have never required before in the 12 years of the Farmer's Market's operation.
Coons is hoping that by the second Farmer's Market, the regular meat vendors as well as restauranteurs such as Bella Vita Bistro will be allowed back.
“We’re working as fast as we can to have it resolved,” said Coons.
Despite the issues with opening a modified farmers market, Coons believes it will run smoothly.
“We’ve been lucky enough to see what California has been doing with their year-round farmer’s markets and we could see what was working for them and what wasn’t,” said Coons. “We all came together as market managers and had a plan.”
