Carson High FBLA honors members with annual awards banquet
Business students from Carson High School assembled Wednesday evening at the Governor's Mansion for the annual Carson City chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) awards banquet.
Nevada Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske was the keynote speaker of the evening, delivering remarks to FBLA students meant to encourage and inspire them as members of a club that grooms future community leaders.
"I think each one of you is a student with critical thinking skills, which are so important in our society," she said. "Students like you with critical thinking skills are going to be leaders in their communities."
Cegavske said the FBLA helps groom young people to excel in business careers, the backbone of the America economy.
"I do believe that small business people are those who grow us not only as communities and as a state, but also as a nation," she said. "They do so much for the communities in which they live."
Carson High's FBLA chapter handed out certificates to each of its members Wednesday, as well as awards for top finishes at the 2016-17 Nevada State Business Leadership Conference high school FBLA competition.
Cegavske and her Chief Deputy Scott Anderson congratulated FBLA state champions from CHS, including double champions Jacob Nichols (business plan, help desk) and Hannah Golik (health care administration, hospitality management). Golik shared the hospitality state championship with teammate Sadie Share.
Shaylin Segura and Sophia Waite teamed up in tandem to win marketing at the state competition, while Nick Fisher had topped the field in business literacy.
Pablo Nobre dos Reis was honored Wednesday for his state championship in job interview at the state competition this year.
CHS senior Mia Brozovich received the Chassey Ako Community Service Award Wednesday. She also finished second at state in community service.
Twelve CHS FBLA students also received awards through the Erin Hackman Scholarship. There are 20 seniors on this year's FBLA team.
Carson High FBLA made a point to formally recognize community members Michael Salogga and the Hop and Mae Adams Foundation for their support and participation in the program.
