New life for Nevada's oldest operating hotel; Gold Hill Hotel re-opens Friday under new management
Gold Hill Hotel, Nevada’s oldest operating hotel, established in 1861, and restaurant re-opens May 15 after a three month renovation and remodel of the restaurant, lounge, bar and hotel.
Robert and Nikki Wilkenson, owners of the Palace Restaurant in Virginia City and Heidi’s Family Restaurant in Carson City, now have the landmark hotel they now manage. They've done a complete refresh to modernize the look of the historic property while remaining true to its Comstock and Gold Hill heritage, including retaining the name of the restaurant — Crown Point Restaurant.
“We took a cautious yet forward-thinking approach to the remodel,” Robert Wilkenson said. “Cautious in regards to the history of the property and the loyalty of its clientele. We hear a lot about the memories and why people love the Gold Hill and so our renovations were designed to enhance that experience and not turn anyone away or have someone think we did too much. Think of it like a Restoration Hardware design. We upped the ante is all. New paint and accents were our primary focus. So far, we’ve heard nothing but positive comments about the warmth, the view and the food. We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Crown Point Restaurant renovations included new furniture, paint with added wainscoting and historic photographs. The lounge is updated with new furniture and historic accent pieces found in storage. The historic bar was opened up by removing cabinetry and incorporating Gold Hill memorabilia. The hotel rooms, currently available for guests, are under renovation with a target date of late summer.
The restaurant hours are 5 – 9 p.m. Thursday through Monday. Bar hours are 4 – 11 p.m. daily. Reservations are recommended for the Crown Point Restaurant by calling 775-847-0111.
