Thunderstorms rattle Carson City; weather may move law enforcement ceremony inside
Rain and thunderstorms have arrived in Carson City this morning with some lightning strikes causing a handful of outages and power pole fires.
With the Nevada Law Enforcement Memorial ceremony happening at noon today, there are contingency plans to move the ceremony inside the State Legislative Building if the heavy rain and thunderstorms persist, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Attendees should come prepared for wet weather in the event the ceremony takes place outside with light rain.
Thunderstorms are possible each day through the remainder of the week, according to the National Weather Service.
These storms may produce lots of small hail which could briefly cover roadways and cause travel headaches. Locally heavy rain should also be expected, especially Thursday through Saturday – but keep in mind that there will be a wide variation in amounts due to the convective nature of the storms.
It is recommended that all street drains and home gutters be cleared by today to prepare for these heavier than usual rains. Those locations with poor drainage will likely see minor flooding at some point, but of greater concern are recent burn scars, such as the Washington Fire, which may produce debris flows if rain is heavy enough.
All rivers will see increases, but no mainstem river flooding is expected.
