Fire destroys Tahoe Keys condos in South Lake Tahoe
Eight condo units inside a multi-family structure were destroyed in a fire Tuesday afternoon in the Tahoe Keys, according to South Lake Tahoe Fire and Rescue. One family was evacuated and there were no injuries or fatalities.
Damage estimates will exceed $3 million, said South Lake Tahoe spokeswoman Tracy Franklin. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department dispatch received a call at 1:48 p.m. Tuesday with reports of smoke from a multifamily dwelling on Ala Wai in the Tahoe Keys neighborhood. Firefighters arrived on scene at 1:56 p.m.
The fire started in an attic of the center unit and spread to adjoining units on both sides. The eight units all have hard wiring for fire alarms but there are no sprinkler systems in any of the units.
Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue fire investigators will begin the investigation once the fire is contained.
More than 20 firefighters fought the blaze. Responding agencies were South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, CalFire, Lake Valley Fire Protection District and Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.
