Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report: Night work begins in downtown area

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of April 25 through May 1, 2016: Work continues on the Downtown Corridor improvement project on Carson Street. Motorists can expect the following traffic impacts this week:

— Night work will begin Sunday night at Musser Street and Carson Street intersection, Washington and Carson Street intersection and Sophia and Carson for the week. Flaggers will be used at Musser and Washington so intersections will be open.
— Carson Street will remain one lane in each direction.
— William Street on the west side of Carson Street will be closed to Curry on Monday and Tuesday.
— Washington Street on the west side of Carson Street will be closed to Curry on Wednesday.
— Fifth Street on the west side of Carson Street will be closed to Curry on Thursday and Friday.
— Sophia, Ann and Fourth streets will be closed all week on the west side of Carson Street to Curry.

Downtown Carson City businesses are open during construction. Closures subject to change due to weather.

Lane closures with flagger controlled traffic at the following locations due to utility/road work from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.:
— Center Drive south of Clear Creek Avenue to Topsy Lane, Monday through Friday
— Humboldt Lane between Long Street and William Street, Wednesday
— Jefferson Drive, Tesla Circle, Farady Circle and Madison Drive, Monday through Friday

Road closures expected at the following locations due to utility/road work please follow detours:
— Division Street between Fleischmann Way and Long Street, Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Long Street between Division and Mountain Streets, Wednesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
— Topsy Lane between Center Drive and Lyla Lane, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local traffic only
— Race Track Road between Bigelow Drive and Schulz Way, Monday through Sunday, for all hours, local track only

Northbound U.S. 395 lanes between Clear Creek Avenue and Snyder Avenue will be reduced from three to two, starting April 25 to May 13.

Periodic, nighttime, lane and ramp closures will take place on southbound I-580 and alternate U.S. 395 in southern Washoe Valley throughout the summer, includes northbound and southbound ramp closures for Bellevue Bridge and southbound ramp closures south of Eastlake Boulevard.

The National Weather Service advises there’s a chance for snow showers in the Sierra and down to the valley floor for the Monday morning commute. For road conditions call 1-800-427-7623 for California and 1-877-NV-Roads for Nevada. You can also check road conditions online for Nevada and California. If you have plans to travel through the Sierra be sure to check the latest forecast at weather.gov/Reno and check road conditions with Caltrans and NDOT.

Around Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, Caltrans reports the following for the week of April 24-30, 2016: State Route 89 (Placer County): Work has resumed on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to just north of Granlibakken Road in Tahoe City that is upgrading storm water drainage and treatment systems, adding curb and gutter, resurfacing and realigning the road, adding new left-turn pockets and widening shoulders on an 8-mile stretch of the highway.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Ward Creek to Tahoe Tavern Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to noon Friday for drainage and excavation work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work has resumed on an $8 million project from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue in Tahoma, installing curb and gutter and drainage systems to collect and treat stormwater. The highway is also being resurfaced. The project will be completed this spring.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday for pavement work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work is set to begin on a $13 million water quality improvement project from Cascade Road to just north of the Eagle Falls Viaduct over Emerald Bay. The project will construct new drainage facilities to treat stormwater runoff and repave a four-mile section of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2017.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Cascade Road to Cascade Creek: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for miscellaneous work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work is set to resume on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 5th Street to 12th Street: Southbound motorists can expect the #2 lane and shoulder closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work. Motorists also can expect one-way traffic control from Pope Beach Road to Fallen Leaf Lake Road around the clock from midnight Monday to 11 a.m. Friday for shoulder work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work has resumed on Placer County’s “Core of the Core” phase of the $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. Highway work includes installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled on the highway.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Lake Forest Road East to Beaver Street: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for survey work.

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Anderson Road to the junction with State Route 267 in Kings Beach: Motorists can expect lane restrictions at various locations from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday for survey work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) at Missouri Flat Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday for utility work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) at Rattlesnake Bar Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday for tree work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Parkway Drive to Carson Road: Motorists can expect the NO. 1 lane and median closed at various locations from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Wednesday for striping work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Sawmill to 8 Mile Road: Westbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane and right shoulder 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday for tree work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the Eagle Rock picnic area to 36 Mile Stone Road: Motorists can expect a lane closer from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for drainage work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Upper Truckee Road North to Poplar Street in South Lake Tahoe: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for survey work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Truckee Drive to River Drive in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound motorists can expect the No. 2 lane and right shoulder closed around the clock from 9 p.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Friday for utility work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from Scenic Drive to Rubicon Glen Drive: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for survey work.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Wilson Avenue to Fairway Drive in Tahoe City: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for survey work.

State Route 193 (El Dorado County) at Rock Creek Road: Motorists can expect long-term signalized one-way traffic control for emergency repair work, which is scheduled to be completed by July.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Brockway Summit to Cambridge/Lincoln Green Drive: Motorists can expect intermittent full highway closures at various locations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for survey work.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.
