Sen. Reid: More than $2.2 million for veteran housing across Nevada
More than $2.2 million in grant money from the Veterans Affairs Support Housing program has been earmarked for veteran housing in Nevada, Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awarded
$168,512 to the Reno Housing Authority and the Sierra Nevada VA Health Care System, and $55,874 to the Nevada Rural Housing Authority with the Sierra Nevada VA Health Care System also receiving a share.
A significant amount, $1,995,867 will go to the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority and the Southern Nevada VA Health Care System. In all, the grants amount to $2,220,253.
“No veteran in Nevada or across America should be homeless after sacrificing so much to protect our freedoms,” said Sen. Reid in a press statement. “Nevada has one of the largest veterans populations in the nation and I take my responsibility to care for these brave men and women seriously."
The HUD-VASH program provides veterans with necessary housing and health care resources, which are critical in order to fight homelessness and provide soldiers with the care they deserve, Reid said.
"I have supported this important program since its creation and have fought tooth and nail against efforts to defund it. I thank both HUD and the VA for awarding these grants to communities across Nevada and I remain committed to doing all I can so that Nevada’s heroes receive the benefits and treatment they need,” he said.
The HUD-VASH program combines Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA provides these services for participating veterans at VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics. HUD and VA award HUD-VASH vouchers based on geographic need and public housing agency administrative performance.
