Shoe Tree brewery opens Saturday in Carson City
A soft open house for family and friends was held Friday evening at the all-new Shoe Tree Brewing Company, one day ahead of a public soft opening set for Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., owners Jeff and Paul Young said Friday.
The opening is preceded by a home-brew competition at the brewing company Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with winners announced around noon or 1 p.m., Paul Young said.
Saturday's soft opening celebration will run until about 9 or 10 p.m., he said.
For the Young Brothers, Saturday will be the culmination of their business vision, which started out of their homes as a home-brewing hobby and grew over time from a passion to a bold venture that they hope will make a mark in Carson City and throughout Northern Nevada.
"It's been super long, and it's kind of surreal that it's actually here," Paul Young said. "It hasn't sunk in yet. All of the support from people has been so cool."
The new brewing facility has been 11 months in the making. Ground broke on the 2,000 square foot brewery in April 2016. The finished structure also includes a tasting room up front that had once been a detached two-car garage.
Some permitting issues with the Municipality of Carson City delayed plans to open in 2016, Jeff Young said, but these have had to do primarily with the use of subterranean mineral hot springs water for the brewing process.
"We're still in the process of getting the permitting for the mineral water," he said. "What it boils down to is we're waiting on some water quality tests to see how those come out."
Young said his company hired an engineer, who will perform the tests, the results of which can take some time to get back.
"Once we do, it will go a long way toward getting the permitting and making the switch to that," he said. "But luckily we've brewed with Carson City city water before, so we are very familiar with it. It wasn't too much of a wrench in the works and we adjusted quickly."
The results are seven beers on tap, a home-made root beer and a cold-brewed coffee chilled using nitrogen, Jeff Young said.
"The same gas that they serve a Guinness on, we're serving this cold-brewed coffee on," he said. "It's a 15-hour cold-brew process. You get less astringency with a coffee when you brew it colder and longer. We serve it right on draft."
The coffee beans for this unique beverage come from a special cold-brew blend grown and roasted by San Rafael Coffee in Carson City, Young said.
"There are certain citrusy flavors that come out through this process," he said.
The Youngs said normal operating hours for Shoe Tree Brewing Company, located 1496 Old Hot Springs Road on the Carson Hot Springs Resort property, will probably be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., depending on business.
A grand opening date for the new brewing facility and tasting room has not been confirmed yet, the Youngs said, but they are hoping for a late April event.
