McCall Realty of Lake Tahoe Lends a Hand to Families, Victims of Violence
In the spring of 2010, McCall Realty promised $20,000 in donations to be shared across five non-profit agencies benefitting the youth of South Shore. Included among the organizations is the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, dedicated to improving the emotional, social, and economic condition of women and families in our community through prevention, intervention and treatment programs and services that address domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse and basic needs.
“Sadly, domestic violence is more common in our town than you might think and children become the victims of broken homes,” said McCall. “The services provided by the Women’s Center are invaluable and benefit our entire community, especially the kids who deserve to have a happy, normal childhood.”
A long time staple on the South Shore, the Women’s Center has been in operation since the early days of the domestic violence movement, providing support for victims of abuse.
They offer comprehensive, confidential services, available to women, men and children, which include: Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter and Transitional Housing; legal advice and / or representation for low-income survivors; advocacy / accompaniment through legal and medical processes; 24-hour crisis hotline and crisis intervention counseling; Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Response Teams; individual counseling for adults and children, weekly support groups for domestic violence survivors, child abuse prevention education in local schools, 52-week Batterers Intervention program for men and women; emergency clothing, food and transportation; and referrals to other social service providers and local government agencies.
Funds received as a result of McCall’s campaign will be utilized for on-going support of children’s therapy including shelter services, individual counseling and more.
“We rely on community support to keep our doors open,” said Vicki Stilwell, Operations Director at the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center. “Thanks to generous donations like the one from McCall and local contributions to our food and clothing closet, we’re able to offer services to the folks who need it most.”
McCall Realty instituted a program last year to spread $20,000 among five area youth-based non-profit organizations. Other donation recipients in addition to the South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center include South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League, Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Youth & Family Services and Court Appointed Social Advocates of El Dorado County.
