Groundbreaking Thursday for Carson City Multi-Athletic Center gymnasium project
The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for the New Multi-Athletic Center, also known as the MAC, gymnasium project. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 a.m., headed up by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
The $8.3 million MAC facility is a 33,418 square foot building with an 8,115 square foot elevated running/walking track. The building includes two collegiate size basketball courts that can be converted to four smaller tournament size courts for basketball and volleyball.
Other amenities include locker rooms, restrooms and administrative space. The project is located on 10.6 acres of land just south of the Boys and Girls Club at 1870 Russell Way.
Miles Construction of Carson City is the general contractor after being awarded the $7.7 million contract. The Project Architect is VCBO of Salt Lake City, Utah. Construction oversight will be managed by the Carson City Public Works Department.
The project is due to be completed in December of 2015 with a grand opening scheduled for that month. The money to pay for the project is generated from the 1/8-cent sales tax passed last year by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
