Business Spotlight: Graphics Factory relocated to South Carson Street in Carson City
The Graphics Factory, a full service screen printing and embroidery shop in Carson City, has moved from its former location on East William Street between State Street and Saliman Road to 1400 South Carson Street next door to Batteries Plus.
According to owner Todd Carl, the business made the move in August of last year after three years at the William Street location, which shared shopping center space with Starbucks and Papa John's Pizza.
"The move was a calculated one," he said. "We were at the end of our initial three-year lease at the Highway 50 location. The building owner was seeking an increase in monthly rents and we were forced to evaluate our use of the space to justify such an increase."
Carl said that the retail portion of the space his business occupied was not utilized well enough to justify covering an increase in rent.
So the search began for a new venue, he said, and ended at Batteries Plus Bulbs on South Carson Street, where a space next door had become available.
"The owner of the building also owns Batteries + Bulbs," Carl said. "He was fantastic to work work during the negotiation phase and a deal was quickly reached."
Although the Graphics Factory is currently under a 2.5-year contract with the property owner, Carl said that doesn't mean his operation won't stick around after his lease is up.
"I can see us staying considerably longer if he'll have us," Carl said.
Last year's move did cost Carl about 500 square feet of space, he said, downsizing from a little over 3,000 square feet to 2,500 square feet.
But that turned out to be better for the business in the long-run, he said.
"The lost space was entirely from the showroom and the production side of things actually grew by a few hundred square feet," he said. "The new building suits us well and production flows much more efficiently with the new layout."
The Graphics Factory's largest customer is the state of Nevada, Carl said. His business also provides uniforms for the Carson City Fire Department.
Besides screenprint and embroidery, Carl said The Graphics Factory is also the remaining supplier of letterman jackets in the Carson Valley. The business supplies lettermans for Carson and Douglas high schools, as well as Dayton, Sierra Lutheran, South Lake Tahoe, Virginia City and even Damonte Ranch High School in South Reno.
