Lyon County Emergency Management: Imminent failure of the South Dayton Retention Pond
UPDATE 5:05PM: Lyon County officials advise the immediate threat from the retention basin is over. Water is still flowing in the drainages but no property or structures are threatened at this time. No evacuations were ordered and there are no reported injuries or fatalities.
There was substantial concern of a "Dam Failure" there is no Dam in the area. Lyon County requested the National Weather Service to activate the Emergency Alert System to notify residents of the potential of flash flooding due to retention basin over flowing. Unfortunately the only category that this event would categorize as was a dam failure. The NWS followed the appropriate protocols and Lyon County is grateful for their cooperation.
Lyon County recommends that the public keep all flood mitigation measures in place for at least a month.
UPDATE 1:43PM From Lyon County Manager Jeff Page: There has been NO dam failure. A storm water retention basin located south west of Dayton Valley Road is full and over flowing into drainages. Currently there are no homes or property threatened. There is potential that could change in the next few hours.
