Prescribed fires throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin to begin Monday

Prescribed fires are planned beginning Monday at various Lake Tahoe basin locations, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The controlled burns are planned for Kingsbury Grade near North Benjamin in Douglas County, the Logan Creek area; north of Emerald Bay; Kings Beach and McKinney Bay near Homewood.
The controlled burns, essential for the reduction of forest fuels that causes wildfires, may continue through the remainder of the week if the weather cooperates and makes conditions safe and conducive to controlled burn operations, according to the Forest Service. Signs will be posted on roadways near the prescribed burn areas. Those who are sensitive to the smoke should stay indoors, and close windows and outside vents.

Forest Service resumes prescribed fire operations on Monday, Feb 6

U.S. Forest Service fuels management crews will resume prescribed fire operations in several locations around the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday, February 6, 2012. Operations may take place north of Emerald Bay, Kingsbury Grade near North Benjamin, the Kings Beach area and the Elizabeth Rd. area of McKinney Bay near Homewood. Locations and size of the operations will depend on conditions at each site. Operations may continue through the week and possibly through the weekend, weather permitting.
Residents and visitors can expect to see smoke from these prescribed fire project areas. The Forest Service strives to minimize the impacts of smoke on local communities. Smoke-sensitive residents should consider staying indoors and keeping doors, windows and outside vents closed. To directly receive prescribed fire updates, send an email to pa_ltbmu@fs.fed.us.
Forest Service staff will post road signs around areas affected by prescribed fire, and update the local fire information line at (530) 543-2600, #6. Other federal, state and local fire management agencies may also be conducting prescribed fire work during this period.
