Blockbuster to close Carson City store; eight to lose jobs
Dish Network will close about 300 Blockbuster stores across the country, including the one in Carson City and two in the Reno area. The company says the closings will result in around 3,000 employees losing their jobs.
The Carson City Blockbuster store, located at 1442 E. William Street, employs eight people, mostly part time. The store will stay open for another 1 to 2 months, said Katherine Aschenerbrener, a manager at the Carson City Blockbuster. She said employees learned about the closing on Friday afternoon and it took the weekend for it to set in for most of them. She said there was disappointment among staff and noted that the store has always been busy with customers.
The last day the store will rent movies and video games will be on Feb. 20. After that everything in the store will go up for sale, she said.
Aschenerbrener said three out of eight employees have second jobs and therefore won't be entirely out of work, except for her and four others.
"The past couple days we've been telling people about it. All of our customers are disappointed because they've been loyal. Most are daily customers," she said.
