Veterans Resource Center site director to speak Thursday at Healthy Communities meeting in Silver Springs
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties meets on the second Thursday of each month.
The Coalition’s next public meeting is Thursday, Dec. 12 at the Silver Springs Community Center at 9 a.m. This month’s guest speaker is Melissa Ferrari, Site Director for the Veterans Resource Center in Carson City.
She'll describe resources available from the community-based nonprofit which focuses on the overall wellness and reintegration of military veterans from all eras. The primary focus of Veterans Resource Centers of America is on housing assistance, behavioral health treatment, and case management, with a holistic approach to addressing the individual needs of each veteran.
In addition, for this month’s meeting time has been set aside so that members can network and connect with other members over a holiday-themed breakfast.
What Is the Coalition? Whether its organic school gardens, mobile dental clinics, tobacco and opioid use prevention, STEAM activities, job skills training, or suicide prevention, Healthy Communities takes a multi-faceted approach to promoting opportunities for health and wellness with a prevention first approach.
Healthy Communities is comprised of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; hundreds of community volunteers; a board of directors and staff, all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1)health care; 2) affordable, locally grown food; and 3) sustainable community-based development opportunities that serve the common good and build local assets and self-reliance.
HCC will not meet in January 2020 so members have an opportunity to attend the annual Nevada Human Services award breakfast in Reno. The 31st Annual Human Services Awards will be held at the Peppermill Casino on Thursday, Jan. 9 from 8 to 10 a.m.
