Carson City's Comma Coffee celebrates 15 years
In the age of hipster coffeehouses springing forth on every corner, sometimes you just want the original. For Carson City residents that’s Comma Coffee, that celebrated 15 years of brewing bliss, on Saturday following the Nevada Day Parade.
As the Nevada Day events wrapped up and the streets began to clear, Comma Coffee’s cleverly themed quinceañera had just begun. Family and friends came together in their decorated courtyard for coffee specials and to enjoy the mariachi band performance. Overhead, colorful, paper flowers bloomed from the strung-up lights, skeletons sporting ponchos and sombreros lounged in the shop’s windows, and the baristas dressed in Mexican styled garb.
Fifteen years of hard work and thousands of coffee beans later there is unbreakable bonds and everlasting love––a strong family philosophy. 12 years into business, Comma Coffee experienced a record-low in sales that was believed would put them out of business. Store manager June Joplin recalled sitting down with her family to discuss their options.
“If we were going to close, we wanted to end on a high note,” said Joplin.
As a family unit, the energy of Comma Coffee shifted and year thirteen of business turned into a springboard for success––the highest record sales which continue to grow with each year. Joplin attributes the success to time and “operating the business and living a life that was absolutely true to ([herself).”
Customers attribute Comma’s success to the atmosphere, plaques granted by Taste of Downtown for “Best Atmosphere” can be spotted among the plethora of framed pieces adorning the walls, friendly staff, and delicious food and beverage options.
Craig Skinner, 61, a frequent breakfast-time customer for over five years jokingly claimed he starves on Sunday’s when they are closed.
“Comma is successful because it is a place for everyone, a place where your name is remembered, and most importantly, because June isn't in it for the buck; she is in it for the community,” said Skinner.
June’s love for the community was one reason Comma Coffee was birthed. From the time she was a child, June had envisioned a place where generations connected, and people of all ages congregated to pause, the philosophy behind Comma, relax, and enjoy in a setting where they count and are truly cared about.
“It was never about the coffee,” said Joplin. “Before opening, I had only ever drank a single latte.”
People flock to the homey feel in Comma Coffee because of the authentic and eclectic environment that could be considered a reflection of June herself. If you have yet to experience Comma Coffee, do yourself a favor and make it down there before their next birthday.
