Water pipeline opponent to speak at Carson Dems' tele-luncheon
Kyle Roerink, Executive Director of the Great Basin Water Network, will be the featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon.
Kyle served as a subject matter expert for Rep. Dina Titus, then as principal advocate for the YES on Question 6 campaign to mandate that 50% of Nevada's electricity be from renewable sources by 2030.
The measure won support from almost 60% of voters in 2018, and if approved again this November it will be added Nevada's constitution.
Since December of 2018, Roerink has led the Great Basin Water Network's legal battles with the Southern Nevada Water Authority in state and federal courts.
In mid-April, the SNWA declined to appeal a resounding rejection by a Nevada District Court of its pipeline project – essentially ending the 14-year legal fight over water in Nevada’s Spring, Cave, Dry Lake and Delamar Valleys. Spring Valley’s water ultimately flows into Utah's Great Salt Lake.
At the center of the fight against the “Las Vegas Water Grab” was Snake Valley, a water-scarce basin stratling the Nevada-Utah border.
Rural officials in both states, the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a host of other tribal, environmental and agricultural interests worked in concert to block the $15 billion pipeline project.
The turning point Utah Gov. Gary Herbert’s 2013 decision not to sign the proposed interstate agreement to divvy up the groundwater in Snake Valley’s shared aquifer.
The Great Basin Water Network's continuing efforts will include speaking out against Las Vegas area's sprawl development and water waste. Meanwhile the Southern Nevada Water Authority has pledged to make water conservation its primary focus.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, June 8th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the temporary shutdown of in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for a link to the teleconference can email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
