New gaming store caters to nostalgic game fans
The mood was cheerful Tuesday at Carson City's newest gaming store's grand opening. Outside, employee Tabatha Hughes barbecued hot dogs; inside, a stand of cupcakes and cake decorated to look like a Super Nintendo stood on a display as owners Nick and Mandy Posey (Mandy was decked out in full Super Mario gear) watched on with pride.
Retro Replay caters to Gen-Xers and older Millennials who remember Mario, Donkey Kong and Pac-Man fondly, with a decor to prove it: a giant mural featuring the arcade and console games of the late 80's decorates the wall. It's the first thing you see when you walk in.
The next think one's eyes might graze across is the retro gaming lounge set up in the corner: two comfortable chairs, an old-school wood-paneled television set, and two or three rather elderly gaming consoles set up to play games like Mario Brothers and Pong.
Not that Retro Replay has a problem with newer game consoles: there are games and accessories for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 alongside the Sega Genesis up for sale. It's a haven for gamers of all types, with competitive pricing and hours that make it available to people who work any shift.
The new store will be celebrating the rest of its grand opening this week and will be open during the Wine Walk. Today, if you stop by you can score a cupcake and a hot dog as well as a game, and sit down to play Mario Bros.
Retro Replay is located at 200 West Washington Street, near the Carson Nugget, and is open 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
