Carson City DA meets with Nevada's congressional delegation in Washington D.C.
Carson City District Attorney Neil Rombardo met with Senator Harry Reid, Senator Dean Heller, Representative Shelly Berkeley, and Representative Joe Heck on Capitol Hill today to urge continued support of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and Fight Crime and Invest in Kids, an anti-crime organization dedicated to early childhood crime prevention.
“The Violence Against Women Act is essential for our prosecution of violent crimes against women,” Rombardo said. “VAWA provides funding for medical and psychological treatment, relocation, and advocacy for victims of domestic and sexual abuse. I was very grateful to see that Nevada’s Congressional Delegation appreciates the importance of VAWA and continues to pledge support for it. Without VAWA funding, we would not be able to provide the services that we currently provide to victims of violent crimes.”
“Fight Crime and Invest in Kids is an outstanding organization dedicated to preventing crime through early childhood intervention,” Rombardo continued. “My office has been part of this organization since the early part of my first term as District Attorney. Our message is that at-risk children who receive quality early intervention are 70% less likely to commit violent crimes later in life. These programs are far more cost-effective than the juvenile justice system and can save communities literally hundreds of thousands of dollars per child. Again, I was very happy to see how receptive our lawmakers are to this concept.”
Rombardo is in Washington, D.C. attending the Executive Board Meeting of the National District Attorney’s Association (NDAA). Rombardo was elected to serve on the NDAA Board as Nevada’s Director in December 2011. The NDAA, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, was founded in 1950 and is now the largest prosecutor’s organization in the world. The NDAA provides training, research, and technical assistance to prosecutors in all 50 states.
