Professionals help middle school students connect learning to real-life experiences
Dr. Lesli Hewitt-Spears, DVM, owner of Quail Ridge Animal Hospital in South Carson City, presented to approximately 250 Carson Middle School students about careers involving the care of animals.
This engagement is part of the Carson City School District Work-Based Learning continuum. Work-Based Learning (WBL) is a statutory mandate for all schools under NRS 389.167.
This educational strategy is designed to create opportunities for students to connect classroom learning to authentic business/industry experiences. Nevada’s WBL continuum incorporates career exploration, preparation and training.
In the WBL continuum, guest speaking engagements from industry professionals fall under career exploration. The engagements are designed to provide a realistic picture of the business, its role in the community, career paths and occupations of its workforce.
Although, this is not a new idea, the district is streamlining the experiences to help prepare students for post-secondary education and careers.
Dr. Hewitt explained how the Agricultural Science and Natural Resources career cluster offered at Carson High School can prepare the student for a career devoted to the care of animals.
Middle school students have also heard from Geologist Lucia Patterson from the Nevada Division of Minerals and Shane Trotter and Matt Croswait about career opportunities with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
