A Douglas County Sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who allegedly pointed a shotgun at him Wednesday.
At around 2:10 p.m., deputies were called to the Gardnerville Cemetery on a report of a dead body, Sheriff's spokesman Jim Halsey said. When deputies arrived, they found David Pendleton, 77, standing next to a truck holding a shotgun, Halsey said.
UPDATE: It appears this may be a case of what some people refer to as "suicide by cop." Douglas County investigators believe Pendleton was the person who reported the dead body to Douglas County Sheriff's dispatch. The deputy responding to the call, Richard Koontz Jr, arrived at the cemetery, Pendleton was about 10 feet from his family's burial plot where his wife was recently buried. Pendleton then reportedly pointed a loaded shotgun at the deputy. The deputy reacted by shooting Pendleton, killing him. Pendleton's cell phone was found at the scene, and had been used to call in the report.
